The Marina Barrage is a dam built across the 350-meter wide Marina Channel to keep out seawater, forming Singapore’s first reservoir in the city and 15th reservoir. Marina Reservoir combines with the future Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs will increase Singapore’s water catchment areas from half to two-thirds of Singapore’s land areas.

It serves to add to Singapore's water supply, control flooding and is also a lifestyle destination.

With the barrage in place, the Marina Basin will turn into a body of freshwater through natural flushing in one two to years. The freshwater will then be treated using advanced membrane technology before consumption.

滨海堤坝把滨海湾水库和海水隔开后，靠近市区的内湾可在两年内逐步换成淡水，形成新加坡第15个蓄水池。

耗资2亿3000万元、三年时间建造的滨海堤坝拥有“三合一”功能，可储水、改善滨海湾周围低洼地区淹水情况，以及成为人们从事各种水上活动的消闲场地。

　国家意识到未来水缺乏之前，新加坡就感受到了这一问题，于是开始收集淡水。这座由城区组成的小岛国几乎四面海水环绕，——现在将近500万人。随着人口的增多，水缺乏的威胁也在加剧。选择很有限，新加坡政府就开始围截河口创造人工蓄水 池。

　　滨海堤坝于2008年11月开放，跨度为1150英尺，由9道冠形铁闸组成，每道闸高90英尺多，铁闸的高度是根据新加坡涨潮时的最高水位设 定，以阻挡海水涌入蓄水池。在低潮期的降雨天气，闸会被放下；在高潮期的雨天，坝里的泵会把水抽出。与此同时，降雨淡水也能流入坝内。循环1、2年后，滨 海堤坝就会成为一个纯粹的淡水库。

　　新加坡政府称，滨海堤坝的集水区占新加坡1/6国土面积。 因此，虽然新加坡的国土面积不是很大，但是，收集淡水的集水区面积却不小。
